Is your company committing an export violation? BIS seminars are coming to the Twin Cities!

August 9, 2013 by Karen Edwards Leave a Comment

BIS-LogoWhen it comes to U.S. export laws, ignorance is no defense and U.S. businesses can be subject to penalties for actions committed by foreign third parties acting on their behalf.  Because the stakes are so high in international business, an ‘export compliance program’ is essential and must be comprehensive.

Two valuable BIS seminars coming to Twin Cities in September sponsored by the Minnesota Trade Office with the Bureau of Industry & Security (BIS):

Days 1 & 2: September 24-25: Complying with U.S. Export Controls

This two-day program provides an in-depth examination of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). The program will cover the information exporters need to know to comply with U.S. export control requirements on commercial goods.

We will focus on what items and activities are subject to the EAR; how to determine your export control classification number (ECCN); steps to take to determine the export licensing requirements for your item; when you can export or re-export without applying for a license; export clearance procedures; and record keeping requirements.

The program is for those who need a comprehensive understanding of their obligations under the EAR.

Day 3: September 26: How to Develop an Export Management & Compliance Program (EMCP)

This one-day workshop provides an overview of the steps a company may take to implement an internal EMCP

Developing and maintaining an export management & compliance program (EMCP) is highly recommended to ensure that export transactions comply with the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), and to prevent export control violations.

Agenda topics include:

  • guidance on how to establish an EMCP;
  • strategies to improve your company’s compliance program;
  • how to avoid common compliance errors;
  • how to build a solid framework for your company’s compliance program.
