WC Ports: No Contract but NO STRIKE!
As expected, the ILWU & PMA did not reach a contract agreement by 5 p.m. yesterday, but both sides indicated that there will be no disruptions at U.S. West Coast ports while negotiations continue.
In a joint release (JOC):
“While there will be no contract extension, cargo will keep moving and normal operations will continue at the ports until an agreement can be reached between the Pacific Maritime Association and the ILWU.”
“Both sides understand the strategic importance of the ports to the local, regional and U.S. economies, and are mindful of the need to finalize a new coastwide contract as soon as possible to ensure continuing confidence in the West Coast ports and avoid any disruption to the jobs and commerce they support.”
Failure to meet the July 1st deadline was expected. Dockworkers do not get paid if they are on strike, and employers are feeling a lot of pressure to reach an agreement.
