Bizlink Technology, an importer of computer cable assemblies located in California, has paid $1.2 million to settle\u00a0charges that it violated the civil False Claims Act<\/strong> <\/em>by underpaying customs duties owed on goods imported from China.<\/p>\n

Based on information from a former manager,\u00a0Bizlink underpaid customs duties through the use of a double invoicing scheme. A lower invoice was presented to Customs\u00a0for calculating duties owed. A higher invoice was used for payment of the\u00a0 computer cables.<\/p>\n

Customs and Border Protection enforces U.S trade laws that protect our nation\u2019s economy and the safety of our citizens. Customs Duty helps control the flow of legitimate foreign manufactured goods entering the country. Attempting to circumnavigate those requirements by fraud carries serious repercussions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

From the DOJ:<\/p>\n

A manager who formerly worked at BTI filed the case pursuant to the qui tam provisions of the False Claims Act. Under those provisions, private citizens, known as \u201crelators,\u201d may file lawsuits on behalf of the United States and receive a portion of the proceeds of a settlement or judgment. The relator will receive $252,000 as his share of the government\u2019s recovery from BTI.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
