{"id":3470,"date":"2014-12-23T15:31:56","date_gmt":"2014-12-23T21:31:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/?p=3470"},"modified":"2014-12-23T15:31:56","modified_gmt":"2014-12-23T21:31:56","slug":"west-coast-ports-federal-mediation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/2014\/12\/23\/west-coast-ports-federal-mediation\/","title":{"rendered":"West Coast Ports: Federal Mediation?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/port-UPDATE-wc.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2965\" src=\"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/port-UPDATE-wc.jpg\" alt=\"port UPDATE - wc\" width=\"266\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a>On Monday, the PMA (represents employers) requested that federal mediators engage in negotiations which have continued unsuccessfully with eight months of talks with the ILWU.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the U.S. Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service said it will be reaching out to the International Longshore and Warehouse Union to see whether it can help in labor talks with U.S. West Coast port employers.<\/p>\n<p>Both sides have to agree to federal mediation before the government will consider entering the talks.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The PMA said ILWU slowdowns, walk-offs have hurt shippers, truckers and others, and the West Coast ports&#8217; market share\u00a0as the major U.S. import and export gateways. The ILWU rejects that it has been involved in such schemes.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The FMCS [Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service] \u00a0said in a statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIn accordance with its statutory responsibilities, the FMCS has been closely monitoring these negotiations for some time and has stood ready to provide mediation services at a moment\u2019s notice. Due to the sensitivity of the negotiations, the FMCS will have no further comment on this request and will not comment regarding the status or substance of the negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">From JOC:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">FMCS is an independent agency that can only become involved at the request of both parties, not the president.
