{"id":4193,"date":"2016-02-10T12:04:34","date_gmt":"2016-02-10T18:04:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/?p=4193"},"modified":"2016-02-10T12:04:34","modified_gmt":"2016-02-10T18:04:34","slug":"faa-advises-assessment-of-risk-over-lithium-batteries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/2016\/02\/10\/faa-advises-assessment-of-risk-over-lithium-batteries\/","title":{"rendered":"FAA Advises Assessment of Lithium Batteries Risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/logoFAA.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4195\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4195\" src=\"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/logoFAA.jpg\" alt=\"logoFAA\" width=\"168\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/logoFAA.jpg 168w, http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/logoFAA-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/logoFAA-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px\" \/><\/a>FAA Advises Assessment of Lithium Batteries Risk<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) yesterday issued a safety alert to US and foreign commercial passenger and cargo airlines, urging them to conduct a safety risk assessment to manage the risks associated with transporting lithium batteries as cargo.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA says it also is issuing guidance to its own inspectors to help them determine whether the airlines have adequately assessed the risk of handling and carrying lithium batteries as cargo.<\/p>\n<p>FAA battery fire testing has highlighted the \u201cpotential risk of a catastrophic aircraft loss due to damage resulting from a lithium battery fire or explosion\u201d and current cargo fire suppression systems cannot effectively control a lithium battery fire.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of tests, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus have advised airlines about the dangers associated with carrying lithium batteries as cargo and also have encouraged them to conduct safety risk assessments.<\/p>\n<p>From FAA:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0\u201cHazardous materials rules currently ban passenger airlines from carrying lithium-metal batteries as cargo. In addition, a number of large commercial passenger airlines have decided voluntarily not to carry rechargeable, lithium-ion batteries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safety risk assessment process is designed to identify and mitigate risks for the airlines that still carry lithium batteries and to help those that don\u2019t carry them from inadvertently accepting them for transport.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The FAA\u2019s Safety Alert For Operators (SAFO) encourages airlines that previously conducted safety assessments to reevaluate them in light of new evidence from the agency\u2019s recent lithium battery fire tests.<\/p>\n<p>To read the news update <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/news\/updates\/?newsId=84785\">FAA<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FAA Advises Assessment of Lithium Batteries Risk The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) yesterday issued a safety alert to US and foreign commercial passenger and cargo airlines, urging them to conduct a safety risk assessment to manage the risks associated with transporting lithium batteries as cargo.
