The SOLAS Convention\u2019s Verified Gross Mass (SOLAS VGM)<br \/>\nVGM &#8211; Verified Gross Mass of a container carrying cargo or also called container weight\u00a0mandate &#8211;\u00a0mandating the verification of container weight prior to shipping. <strong>Effective July 1, 2016<\/strong>, containers must have verified weight documents if they are to be loaded onto a ship.<\/p>\n<p>Here are two options to meet the regulations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first is to weigh a container on a truck as it passes over a weigh station, subtracting the weight of the truck, chassis and fuel to determine the weight of the loaded container.<\/li>\n<li>The second is to weigh each item going into a container and add the sum of all the goods loaded to the tare weight of the container.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The necessary documentation <em>must<\/em> be\u00a0provided to the terminal and carrier along with the container, or it will <em>not<\/em> be loaded on the ship.<\/p>\n<p>See blog post:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/2016\/02\/23\/how-to-meet-the-solas-container-weight-mandate\/\">How to Meet the SOLAS Container Weight Mandate<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are still many uncertainties:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Countries\u2019 implementation guidelines<\/li>\n<li>VGM cutoff times<\/li>\n<li>How potential\u00a0delays may impact performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cargosmarton.com\/app\/newsletter\/issues\/CargoSmart_Innovating_Apr2016_Issue42.pdf\">CargoSmart<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>CargoSmart has been compiling the SOLAS implementation information from the industry and official announcements to help relevant\u00a0parties prepare for compliance. Only 11 of the 171 Member States of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have published\u00a0guidelines.
