{"id":4506,"date":"2016-08-05T11:23:52","date_gmt":"2016-08-05T16:23:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/?p=4506"},"modified":"2016-08-05T11:23:52","modified_gmt":"2016-08-05T16:23:52","slug":"canadian-iranian-citizen-sentenced-to-three-years-in-prison-for-conspiring-to-violate-iran-sanctions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/2016\/08\/05\/canadian-iranian-citizen-sentenced-to-three-years-in-prison-for-conspiring-to-violate-iran-sanctions\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian-Iranian Citizen Sentenced To Three Years In Prison For Conspiring To Violate Iran Sanctions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Department-Of-Justice-Seal-e1446679261876.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4101\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4101\" src=\"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Department-Of-Justice-Seal-e1446679261876.png\" alt=\"DOJ seal\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Canadian-Iranian Citizen Sentenced To Three Years In Prison For Conspiring To Violate Iran Sanctions<\/p>\n<p class=\"node-title\">ALI REZA PARSA, a Canadian-Iranian dual citizen and resident of Canada, was sentenced to three years in prison for his participation in a conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (\u201cIEEPA\u201d) and the Iranian Transactions and Sanctions Regulations (\u201cITSR\u201d).\u00a0 PARSA was arrested in October 2014 following an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (\u201cFBI\u201d) and United States Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security (\u201cBIS\u201d).\u00a0 PARSA pled guilty on January 20, 2016.<\/p>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-pr-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p>Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAs he admitted in court, Ali Reza Parsa conspired to purchase high-tech electronic components \u2013 some used in the production of rockets and missiles \u2013 from American companies for eventual delivery to Iran through Canada.\u00a0 He has now been sentenced to three years in prison for his violation of federal law.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Assistant Attorney General John P. Carlin said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOver the course of six years, Parsa repeatedly violated export control laws and aided Iranian entities in procuring high-tech electronic components that have both commercial and military uses.\u00a0 With this sentence, he will be held accountable for circumventing important U.S. laws designed to protect our national security interests.\u00a0 One of our top national security priorities remains safeguarding our national assets from those who may wish to do us harm.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the Indictment filed against PARSA and other court documents publicly filed in this case and statements made in court proceedings, including Friday\u2019s sentencing:<\/p>\n<p>Between approximately 2009 and 2015, PARSA conspired to obtain high-tech electronic components from American companies for transshipment to Iran and other countries for clients of PARSA\u2019s procurement company in Iran, Tavan Payesh Mad, in violation of U.S. economic sanctions.\u00a0 To accomplish this, PARSA used his Canadian company, Metal PM, to place orders with U.S. suppliers and typically had the parts shipped to him in Canada or to a freight forwarder located in the United Arab Emirates, and then transshipped from these locations to Iran or to the location of his Iranian company\u2019s client.\u00a0 PARSA provided the U.S. companies with false destination and end-user information about the components in order to conceal the illegality of these transactions.<\/p>\n<p>PARSA\u2019s criminal scheme targeted numerous American technology companies.\u00a0 The components that PARSA attempted to procure included cryogenic accelerometers, which are sensitive components that measure acceleration at very low temperatures.\u00a0 Cryogenic accelerators have both commercial and military uses, including in applications related to ballistic missile propellants and in aerospace components such as liquid-fuel rocket engines.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, following his arrest and while incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center, PARSA continued to violate the IEEPA and the ITSR\u00a0 by conducting business for Metal PM and Tavan Payesh Mad, including by ordering parts from German and Brazilian companies for Iranian customers.\u00a0 PARSA subsequently directed a relative to delete email evidence of his ongoing business transactions while in jail, emphasizing the need for secrecy in their dealings.<\/p>\n<p>Neither PARSA nor any other individual or entity involved in transactions that gave rise to his conviction applied for or obtained a license from the U.S. Department of the Treasury\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control for the transactions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\">*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the 36-month prison term, PARSA, 45, was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment.<\/p>\n<p>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/pr\/canadian-iranian-citizen-sentenced-manhattan-federal-court-three-years-prison\">here<\/a> to read the entire press release<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canadian-Iranian Citizen Sentenced To Three Years In Prison For Conspiring To Violate Iran Sanctions ALI REZA PARSA, a Canadian-Iranian dual citizen and resident of Canada, was sentenced to three years in prison for his participation in a conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (\u201cIEEPA\u201d) and the Iranian Transactions and Sanctions Regulations (\u201cITSR\u201d).\u00a0 [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":4101,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_s2mail":"yes","_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":""},"categories":[6,17,70],"tags":[50,71,48],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.0 -
