2014 Pending West Coast Dock Strike
The current 6 year contract between the ILWU (Union) and PMA (Employers) expires 5:00pm PT on July 1st 2014.
At the beginning of March, there was expressed cautious optimism about the West Coast contract negotiations by the chief negotiator Jim McKenna.
From JOC article:
McKenna said past experience demonstrates that if negotiations begin in March, nothing of substance will be addressed before June. There will be breaks in the talks and no sense of urgency will develop until the July 1 deadline gets closer, he said
What can you do to plan?
- Contact your forwarder for plans and options based on your supply chain
- SHIP EARLY
- Complete production and physically ship/receive early
- Look at warehouse space options
- Consider other routings
- Canada or other West Coast ports
- Shipping via Air if necessary
