UPDATE-West Coast PortsWest Coast Ports: Work Resumes on Monday after Suspension leaves 40 Ships Stranded at Anchor

From JOC:

Operations on vessels were suspended this weekend on all shifts and at all West Coast ports.  The goal – to dig out of the container backlog and congestion. However, the terminals generally maintained gate and yard operations.  The goal of the employers was a need to reduce container backlogs and labor costs due the work slowdowns by the by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union that show no sign of ending.

The loading and unloading of vessels was suspended at all of the major container ports beginning with the night shift on Friday.  According to the Pacific Maritime Association, vessel loading and unloading will resume at all ports on the day shift Monday.

On Friday, forty container ships were anchored at ports up and down the West Coast which will likely cause more delays into next week. The action left dozens of ships stranded at anchor as the new week begins:

  • Fourteen were anchored at the Port of Oakland
  • Seven were awaiting berth at Tacoma
  • Coast Guard’s Vessel Traffic Center in Seattle said that vessels were running out room in the Puget Sound
  • 18 container ships were anchored off Los Angeles-Long Beach
