{"id":1751,"date":"2013-08-14T14:58:52","date_gmt":"2013-08-14T19:58:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/?p=1751"},"modified":"2013-08-14T14:58:52","modified_gmt":"2013-08-14T19:58:52","slug":"american-us-airways-merger-is-challenged-by-justice-department","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/2013\/08\/14\/american-us-airways-merger-is-challenged-by-justice-department\/","title":{"rendered":"American-US Airways merger challenged by Justice Department"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/AA-US-merger.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1755\" alt=\"AA - US merger\" src=\"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/AA-US-merger-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/AA-US-merger-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/AA-US-merger-120x120.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The Justice Department unexpectedly moved to block the merger of American Airlines and US Airways.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit they filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Washington said the American-US Airways deal would go too far and hurt competition because it would leave four airlines controlling more than 80% of the U.S. market.\u00a0The federal government said\u00a0it would cause &#8220;substantial harm&#8221; to consumers by leading to higher fares and fees.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder\u00a0said in a statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This transaction would result in consumers paying the price\u2014in higher airfares,\u00a0higher fees and fewer choices.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In response, AA and US Airways\u00a0have said their merger would benefit consumers by building a new airline that could compete with larger rivals.
