They also pressed both sides to do whatever it takes to avoid work slowdowns or stoppages. Also they requested to extend the existing contract if it goes beyond July 1st when the\u00a0&#8216;no-strike&#8217; clause\u00a0expires.<\/p>\n<p>According to the ILWU website, here is what the members have directed their\u00a0negotiating committee to address in the negotiations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stronger safety provisions<\/li>\n<li>Wages<\/li>\n<li>More secure benefits<\/li>\n<li>Greater respect for ILWU jurisdiction<\/li>\n<li>A reasonable approach to new technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Absent from this list\u00a0are the \u201cCadillac\u201d tax in the federal Affordable Health Care Act and the proposed length of the new contract.<\/p>\n<p>McKenna, the President of the PMA, said those issues will actually be front and center in the negotiations. \u201cThe health care plan needs to be addressed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Both parties (ILWU and PMA) have agreed to begin negotiations on May 12 and to work non-stop until an agreement is reached.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>West Coast Port 2014 Contract\u00a0Talks to Begin May 12th The president of the PMA (Pacific Maritime Association)\u00a0said\u00a0that the U.S. West Coast employers\u2019 organization will begin contract negotiations with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union on May 12th.
