GAO to Investigate W\"port<\/a>est Coast Port Congestion<\/p>\n

A U.S. senator asked the GAO (Government Accountability Office) to research the effects of the labor-related slowdown at West Coast ports.\u00a0Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) released the letter she sent\u00a0on April 15.<\/p>\n

Fischer wants GAO to examine four points:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. the impact of the slowdown on related industries, including agriculture, manufacturing and retail sales;<\/li>\n
  2. shifts to other modes of transportation and their effects on supply chains;<\/li>\n
  3. the costs and effects of regional shifts;<\/li>\n
  4. and an evaluation of the current status of infrastructure at West Coast ports<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    From JOC<\/a>:<\/p>\n

    Reports suggest the port delays caused a backlog of up to 8 weeks in length, she said, and it has been reported that it will take another 3 to 6 months for port operations to normalize.<\/p>\n

    Fischer gave the agency 18\u00a0months to complete its research – October 2016.<\/p>\n
