{"id":4817,"date":"2017-08-10T17:05:43","date_gmt":"2017-08-10T22:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/?p=4817"},"modified":"2017-08-10T17:05:43","modified_gmt":"2017-08-10T22:05:43","slug":"singapore-man-sentenced-40-months-prison-illegal-exports-iran-u-s-components","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/2017\/08\/10\/singapore-man-sentenced-40-months-prison-illegal-exports-iran-u-s-components\/","title":{"rendered":"Singapore Man Sentenced to 40 Months in Prison &#8211; Illegal Exports to Iran of U.S. Components"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Department-Of-Justice-Seal-e1485275254574.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4101\" src=\"http:\/\/supfrt.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Department-Of-Justice-Seal-e1485275254574.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Singapore Man Sentenced to 40 Months in Prison &#8211; Illegal Exports to Iran of U.S. Components<\/p>\n<p>Lim Yong Nam, aka Steven Lim, 43, a citizen of Singapore, was\u00a0sentenced to 40 months in prison for his role in a conspiracy that caused thousands of radio\u00a0frequency modules to be illegally exported from the U.S. to Iran, at least 14 of which were later\u00a0found in unexploded improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>Lim was extradited in 2016 from Indonesia, where he had been detained since October \u00a02014 in connection with the U.S. request for extradition. He pleaded guilty on Dec. 15, 2016, to\u00a0a charge of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. by dishonest means. Lim will be deported upon\u00a0completion of his sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Lim and others were indicted in the District of Columbia in June of 2010 on charges\u00a0involving the shipment of radio frequency modules made by a Minnesota-based company. The\u00a0modules have several commercial applications, including in wireless local area networks\u00a0connecting printers and computers in office settings. These modules include encryption\u00a0capabilities and have a range allowing them to transmit data wirelessly as far as 40 miles when\u00a0configured with a high-gain antenna. These same modules also have potentially lethal\u00a0applications. Notably, during 2008 and 2009, coalition forces in Iraq recovered numerous\u00a0modules made by the Minnesota firm that had been utilized as part of the remote detonation\u00a0system for IEDs.
