At the end of last week, the PMA sent a “new proposal” to the union. The ILWU met over the weekend and returned the proposal to the PMA with the union’s comments. The ILWU caucus began Monday morning and reviewed the proposal and is awaiting the PMA’s response.
The PMA confirmed that the employers presented the union with their offer on Thursday. Then the ILWU today responded with its counter proposals. The PMA is considering the union’s response and expects to get back together with the ILWU later this week.
The ILWU caucus is waiting for a response from the PMA that hopefully will result in an eventual settlement. The caucus will review the PMA’s response to the ILWU’s comments and then make recommendations to the ILWU negotiating team. If the caucus recommends acceptance of this proposed contract, then the ILWU will bring it to the union’s membership for a vote – which could take several weeks.
