GAO to Investigate West Coast Port Congestion
A U.S. senator asked the GAO (Government Accountability Office) to research the effects of the labor-related slowdown at West Coast ports. Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) released the letter she sent on April 15.
Fischer wants GAO to examine four points:
- the impact of the slowdown on related industries, including agriculture, manufacturing and retail sales;
- shifts to other modes of transportation and their effects on supply chains;
- the costs and effects of regional shifts;
- and an evaluation of the current status of infrastructure at West Coast ports
From JOC:
Reports suggest the port delays caused a backlog of up to 8 weeks in length, she said, and it has been reported that it will take another 3 to 6 months for port operations to normalize.
Fischer gave the agency 18 months to complete its research – October 2016.
