West Coast Strike? Possible Port Congestion Surcharges
Contract negotiations between the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) and Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) are scheduled to commence on May 12, 2014. Talks are scheduled to run continuously for at least two weeks or until both sides agree on a new labor contract. The current labor contract expires on July 1, 2014. With the possibility of labor unrest also comes the possibility of Port Congestion Surcharges. These would be issued by ocean liners should there be any labor unrest or striking along the US ports/terminals this summer. While these charges are announced by the liners, they will only apply if labor unrest and/or striking occur. If there is no work stoppage or work slowdowns, the charges will not apply. If there is any form of labor unrest, these charges would likely apply to all sea freight trade to and from U.S.A. regardless of the specific origin or destination ports/terminals where vessels are loaded (USWC, USEC, Canada).
The amounts of the surcharge may vary slightly by carrier but a summary of charges is below for your reference:
- $800/20’
- $1,000/40’
- $1,125/40’HC
- $1,266/45’
