Possible WC Dock Strike: Ship Early

May 9, 2014 by Karen Edwards Leave a Comment

port strategyPossible WC Dock Strike: Ship Early The negotiations between the ILWU (International Longshore & Warehouse Union) and the PMA (Pacific Maritime Association) are scheduled to begin on May 12th, 2014.  Although talks are starting long before the July 1st deadline, many International Transportation Experts believe that slowdowns at the Los Angeles / Long Beach ports are likely. How do you prepare for that?

  • Ship Early – get more inventory on the water now to arrive prior to the July 1st deadline so that any slowdown or work stoppage does not interrupt your supply chain.
    • As many customers are likely to take this preemptive action, ships will fill quickly so time is of the essence.
  •  Route via an alternate port (Seattle/Tacoma/Vancouver)
