Trans-Pacific Trade and the Era of Mega-ships
The new CMA CGM ship the Benjamin Franklin will be the largest vessel to arrive at the Port of Los Angeles on December 26th. It has 17,859 20-foot-equivalent unit capacity.
The Benjamin Franklin will be handled at APM Terminals Pier 400 in Los Angeles. This port (as well as the Ports America Outer Harbour Terminal in Oakland) can currently handle 13,000 to 14,000 TEU’s.
From JOC:
The peaking effect associated with the large ships hasn’t happened yet,” Widdows said at the JOC’s TPM Asia conference in Shenzhen. “The amount of capacity coming is enormous and will play out over the next couple years, and the pressure these carriers will be under from a profitability standpoint will be significant.”
With the Mega-ships, there will be operational issues as it will put more pressure on chassis & more pressure on trucks. These environments are already fragile.
